On Wednesday November 8 at 1:00 pm we will hear about local and national efforts to pass legislation in Illinois to make Medical Aid In Dying available to our citizens, as it is in 10 other states and the District of Columbia, as an option for those with terminal illnesses.  Dr. John Lurain, a retired gynecologic oncologist, who is a member of the local End-of-Life Oak Park/Western Suburbs Action Team affiliated with the national Compassion & Choices organization, will discuss multiple aspects of and options regarding end-of-life decision making, including medical aid in dying.  
 
Dr John Lurain received his BA from Oberlin College in 1968 and his MD from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in 1972.  He had residency training in OBGYN at the University of Pittsburgh Magee-Womens Hospital 1972-1975.  After serving in the United States Navy as Lieutenant Commander at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia from 1975-1977,  Dr. Lurain completed a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY.  In 1979, he joined the faculty at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, where he served as the John & Ruth Brewer Professor of Gynecology and Cancer Research and the Director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Northwestern Medicine.  He retired in 2019.  He has been a resident of Oak Park for 44 years..After his wife died of cancer in 2021, he joined the local End-of-Life Action Team with the aim of helping people make appropriate decisions at the end of life and provide them with information on options for care during this distressing time.

The Art and Inventory sub-committee is pleased to announce that they will present an afternoon of NCCA art appreciation. David Sokol will speak about Carl Krafft, and Bob Trezevant will give a personal account (and fully researched account), of Blanch Weyburn Kerr and her paintings at the Nineteenth; Other members will then present informal talks about an artist and the oil painting of their choice. Margaret Sawczuk (art restorer extraordinaire) owner of The Art Objects in Oak Park, will be on hand to discuss the restorations that she has completed including the tools she uses.
