At the end of the Nineteenth century, the "New Woman" emerged: a woman who engaged in politics, flouted convention, and even worked outside the home. And yet, there was no "New Man" to greet her. The phrase "New Men" didn't even exist--that's how entirely not 'new' men were. Catherine Prendergast, author of The Gilded Edge, will introduce us to this clash of genders and two prominent New Women who chose death by cyanide rather than be thrust back into stifling lives.
