Author and local theater critic Doug Deuchler will examine the horror movie genre, one of the most profitable in the history of filmmaking. The program will focus on the period of the 1930s, the Great Depression, when these movies transformed struggling Universal Pictures into one of the most powerful forces in the film industry. Deuchler will examine the influence of German Expressionism, several key Universal stars (Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi) and representative Universal horror classics.
