In this program, author Miles Harvey tells the riveting story of the most infamous American con man you’ve never heard of: James Strang, self-proclaimed divine king of earth, heaven, and an island in Lake Michigan, until his assassination in 1856. Harvey’s book, The King of Confidence, was a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice pick in 2020. It also received a long-list citation for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction and was a finalist for the Society of Midland Authors Award for Biography and Memoir.
