The Murder of Mary Jane Reed: Approaching Truth Through Fact and Fiction Mary Jane Reed and boyfriend Stanley Skridla were found murdered in Oregon, Illinois, in June, 1948. Despite hundreds of leads, the killer was never found. Fifty years later, the case was re-opened. Pulitzer Prize-winner Ted Gregory reported the case for the Tribune. Shamus Award nominee crime novelist Jack Fredrickson followed his reporting. Obsessed with the decades-old case, they became the best of friends and wrote: Gregory in his memoir, Mary Jane’s Ghost, and Fredrickson in his novel, Silence the Dead.
