The Gothic Effect: How Modern Culture Reflects the Gothic Tradition

Horace Walpole wrote the first Gothic novel in 1764. Author Julia Buckley will look at not just Walpole’s style and his connection to both Shakespeare and Gothic architecture, but at the way his Gothic novel has shaped our modern culture, from the art of Edward Gorey and the films of Tim Burton, to the many genres of literature that have descended from the Gothic ideal.  Buckley will examine the many features of Gothic fiction and explore images that have stayed in our collective unconscious to emerge, generation after generation, in our artistic work.
