Inspired by her 91-year-old aunt, Shimojima researched her family’s journey from Japan to the U.S. Through the war years, Japanese Americans faced racial prejudice, assembly centers, and incarceration camps. They also were in the majority of the legendary 442nd Regimental Combat team, the most highly decorated unit in U.S. military history.
