American Art Examines Literature & Daily Life or Art Loves Lit. with David Sokol This first of four lectures will trace the relationship between the visual arts and such diverse literary sources as bible, history, myths and popular writing.... the way that the lives of both rural and, later, urban dwellers, will be explored through paintings, photographs, prints, and sculpture. From the Colonial Period to the Civil War: Religion and National Identity - Both secular and religious texts were given visual form in the several areas controlled by European colonizers. With the Revolution and the founding of the new country, literary allusions and symbols were adapted to forging a new and unified national identity. Doors open: 7:00 p.m. Program: 7:30 - 9 p.m. $25 at the door.
