The Free Readers Ensemble caps its successful 2016-2017 season with Christopher Durang’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, a hilarious take on Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, which will be performed Sunday, May 21 at 3 pm, at the Nineteenth Century Club, 178 Forest Avenue in Oak Park. Admission is free with free parking available in the village parking lot in the Vantage building just south of the Nineteenth Century building.

The story revolves middle-aged single siblings, two of whom live together on the family estate. It takes place during a visit by the third, Masha, who supports them financially, and her young boyfriend, Spike. As they rehash their lives and loves, Masha threatens to sell the house. The play's setting is a cherry orchard, and the theme is the possible loss of an ancestral home and family history.

According to director Barbara Eulenberg, It's ultimately a story about family — siblings in particular — and how, in the end, family is everything. The cast is David Krajecki as Vanya, Barbara Eulenberg as Sonia, Paulette Cary as Masha, Thad Anzur as Spike, Sarah Hayes as Nina, and guest actor Stephanie Samuel as Cassand
