Category: Community's Events- Open to the Public

The Free Readers Ensemble, now in its 23rd year, will present the play, Freud’s Last Session, by Mark St. Germain, on Sunday, May 15, at 2:00 pm, at the Nineteenth Century Club, 178 Forest Avenue in Oak Park. It is the final play of the season.

The play is directed by Free Readers co-founder Paulette Cary, who describes it as a discussion of the existence of God between dying atheist Freud and late-blooming Catholic C. S. Lewis. It is set against the background of World War II London.

“I was blown away when I saw this play several years ago in Chicago,” says Cary. “I tried to get the rights to do it, but was rejected year after year. Finally, last year, they said yes.”

In addition to the fascinating dialogue between Freud and Lewis, Cary says she thinks the audience will enjoy the sound effects created by veteran ensemble and cast member Ray Cunha, who plays Lewis. Freud will be played by Jerry Bloom. “The actors will be able to turn the radio on and hear the BBC announcer and actual recordings of King George and Lord Chamberlain.”

Parking is free on Sundays at the new parking garage on Lake and Forest and at any metered street spaces. There is also parking along Ontario Street or on Kenilworth or Forest Avenues.
