Northwestern University professor and author Kate Masur will detail the history of the Illinois “Black laws” - laws that restricted the rights of free African Americans from the state’s founding through 1865 - and organized efforts to repeal those laws. Among the Illinoisans who demanded repeal were Black leaders John Jones and H. Ford Douglass, as well as white editor Zebina Eastman.
