1968: A Personal Account of a Turbulent and Terrifying Year

Nineteenth Century member Brian Flora gives a personal account of 1968.  It was his intensely-lived and vividly-remembered Annus Horribilis, a year that he experienced "up close and personal".  In May he graduated from a liberal arts college near Boston.  By September, he was a young draftee on his way to Vietnam.  The horrific war, shown on the nightly news, was at its awful peak.  Antiwar protests occurred daily on campuses and in the streets.  The assassination of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy were followed by massive and often violent race riots across the country.  In August, Brian was tear gassed at the Chicago Democratic Convention.  Nixon won the election.  Throw in the social turmoil: Free Love, drugs, Flower Power, Women's Lib, Haight Asbury and more.
